Born in Rowan County, North Carolina, son of James Brown and Mary Williams Emerson. Family history; marriage to Elizabeth Stephens, 1823; removal to Illinois in 1831; conversion to Mormonism in 1840; removal to Florence, Nebraska; his son, James, joins the Mormon Battalion; quarrel with Brigham Young leading to removal to Calhoun, Iowa; Indian difficulties in Iowa; his rebaptism in Salt Lake City, 1874; his death in Calhoun, Iowa.
